Description

When the pressure is on and the stakes are high, good judgement can be the first thing to fail. Naval aviators can't let that happen.

After nearly three decades in the Royal Navy flying and commanding in some of the world's most demanding environments, Captain Joe Dransfield has learned one truth: your decisions are your real superpower and most of us are using only a fraction of our potential.

From the cockpit of a maritime attack helicopter to command of naval forces at sea and multinational operations, he's lived high-stakes decision-making as well as studied and taught it to future international military leaders.

In The Decisive Edge, Dransfield lifts the curtain on how high-performance operators think, choose and act when every second counts. Drawing on operational experience, psychology and neuroscience, he has designed the DECIDE Pathway™ – a practical method for thinking clearly and acting decisively when complexity and pressure mount.

Whether you're leading a team, running a business or navigating everyday life, The Decisive Edge will help you cut through the noise, avoid common traps and build the decision-making power that sets exceptional performers apart.

Master the craft of better decisions and change the trajectory of your life, work and leadership.

Praise for The Decisive Edge

'If history teaches us anything, it's that the moment of decision is the moment that really matters. Great commanders have always known that clear decisions under pressure win the day. Joe Dransfield skilfully translates that hard-won wisdom into a craft that can help anyone become a better decision-maker.' Dan Snow MBE – Historian, Author and Broadcaster

'The greatest strength of The Decisive Edge is its ability to balance theoretical depth with practical relevance. The combination of compelling operational case studies, contemporary business examples and interdisciplinary scholarship produces a framework that is applicable far beyond its military origins. Consequently, the book has considerable relevance for leaders and practitioners working in higher education, healthcare, defence, policing, emergency services, public administration, and the private sector, all of whom operate within increasingly complex and uncertain environments.' Professor Gerri Matthews-Smith – Director, Centre for Military Research. Edinburgh Napier University

'From decisions forged in the cockpit of a Lynx helicopter to today's AI enabled decisions, Joe makes sense of how we each make thousands of decisions on a daily basis, and importantly why. If only every organisation and board had a Joe on the team, smarter decisions would become the norm.' Vice Admiral (Retd) Sir Martin Connell KCB CBE – Former Second Sea Lord

Joe Dransfield spent twenty-eight years in the Royal Navy as an aviator, operational commander and senior executive, making consequential decisions in high-risk, technology-rich, time-critical environments: from warfighting in Iraq to counter-piracy and counter-narcotics operations, to commanding a multinational task group across the Indo-Pacific.

Alongside these operational roles, he spent a decade researching decision-making, including during his time as Military Professor at the US Naval War College, where he taught strategy, critical thinking, and risk-based operations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Chartered Management Institute, and a qualified coach. He holds an MA in Strategy and an MBA. Joe now writes, speaks and advises on the discipline he believes matters most: how we decide. The Decisive Edge is his first book.
